This English singer and composer born on May 11, 1941 but, without doubt, is best known for being the lead singer of bands like The Animals and War and his aggressive stage. Even Rolling Stone magazine included him at number 57 in their ranking of the 100 greatest singers of all time.
It was in 1962 when the band The Animals, with their mix of blues and rock, landed in USA along with other groups like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Kins putting English music popular among all fans. It was at this time when they recorded their best singles as The House of the Rising Sun, Sky Pilot, I'm Crying or Bring it on Home to Me among others.
After years in which the band underwent changes and abandonment by one of its components, was renamed Eric Burdon and The New Animals. But despite this being their principal band, Burdon, while living in Los Angeles, also had time in 1969 to record with funk rock band War.
In 1971, Burdon began his career alone with The Eric Burdon Band along with his blues influences, funk, hard rock and hevy metal.
Throughout these years, Eric Burdon has recorded several albums and made numerous collaborations with all sorts of musicians up to 2013, the year in which surprises us with his latest work "Til Your River Runs Dry", 12 songs most compounds by Eric himself and Bluesaldia presented in Hondarribia.
At an early age, Shemekia Copeland is already a force to keep in mind in the blues. She headlined big festivals such the Chicago Blues Festival and the B.B.King Festival. Moreover, she has taken part in numerous festivals around the world. She got Critics Choice Awards on both sides of the Atlantic (The New York Times and The Times of London) and she shared the stage with legends like Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Mick Jagger, and Eric Clapton. She has even performed at the White House for Obama President and his wife. Heir of the rich tradition of blues, following divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor,
Copeland gives the music a timeless power and an intense urgency. Her music comes from deep within her soul and from the streets where she grew up, surrounded by the everyday sounds of the city – street performers, gospel singers, radios, bands in local parks and much more.
Born in Harlem, New York, in 1979, Copeland actually came to her singing career slowly. Her father, the late Texas blues guitar legend Johnny Clyde Copeland, recognized his daughter's talent early on. He always encouraged her to sing at home, and even brought her on stage to sing at Harlem's famous Cotton Club when she was just eight. At the time, Shemekia's embarrassment outweighed her desire to sing. But when she was fifteen and her father's health began to fail, her outlook changed. "It was like a switch went off in my head, and I wanted to sing," she says. "It became a want and a need. I had to do it."
At only 19, Shemekia stepped out of her father's shadow with the Alligator Records release of 1998 debut recording, Turn the Heat Up, and the critics praised. The Village Voice called her "nothing short of amazing," while the Boston Globe proclaimed: "she roars with a hot intensity." A year later, she appeared in the film Three To Tango, while her song "I Always Get My Man, was featured in the film Broken Hearts Club.
Her second album, Wicked, released in 2000, got three Handy Awards (Song of the Year, Blues Album of the Year, Contemporary Female Artist of the Year) and a GRAMMY nomination. Two years later, New Orleans R&B legend Dr. John took part to produce her third recording, Talking To Strangers (2002), which Vibe called "an harmonious blend of rock and cheeky ballads."
Copeland released The Soul Truth in 2005. The album was produced by the legendary guitarist Steve Cropper Stax (who also played on the CD), and came with generous doses of blues, funk and Memphis-flavoured soul.
Never Going Back, her 2009 debut in Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, captured Copeland at a crossroads on that artistic path. While Copeland will always remain loyal to her blues roots, Never Going Back took a more forward view, and in so doing pointed her music and her career in a new direction. Produced by Oliver Wood, guest artists included John Medeski, Marc Ribot and Chris Wood.
"I've had success in my career, and I'm happy with that," she says. "But that doesn't mean I don't want to continue growing. In order not to stop growing, what you have to do is a new thing. I'm really proud to say I'm a blues singer, but that doesn't mean that's the only thing I'm capable of singing, or that's the only style of music I'm capable of making."
She adds: "I want to keep growing. My main aim when I started this was that I was going to do something different with this music, so that this music could evolve and grow. I got that idea from my father. He didn't do the typical four-five blues. He went to Africa and worked with musicians from there. He was one of the first blues artists to do that. I want to be the same way. I want to be innovative with the blues."
Copeland has just recorded a new album produced by Oliver Wood, which came out the 25th September 2012 in Telarc.
MITCH KASHMAR: Mitch Kashmar is one of the most soulful and powerful blues singers in the business today, black or white. His blues harp playing is second to none for creativity, drive and excitement. Over the course of his career Kashmar has achieved what so many set out to do, but few can accomplish; he has found his own voice. From his humble beginnings in the early 80's in Santa Barbara with The Pontiax, to sharing the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2008 with legendary British rocker Eric Burdon & War, Kashmar's own unique talent has always shone through. A two-time Blues Music Award nominee, Kashmar has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in blues over the years and they've all known what the rest of the world is about to find out: Mitch Kashmar is a force to be reckoned with.
RANDY CHORTKOFF: Randy Chortkoff is a man thoroughly possessed and consumed by the Blues. He's made it his life's work to spread the power and message of the Blues to as many people as he can find who are willing to listen. BIG PETE: Dutch blues vocalist and harp master Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm may not have been a familiar name to American blues audiences before 2010, but he was already well-established in the Netherlands – his native home base in North-West Europe. At 23, Pete was handpicked for a European memorial tour to honor the music and memory of legendary harmonica player and vocalist Lester Butler (the Red Devils and Thirteen), backed by several of Lester's original band mates. Pete's informal introduction to the U.S. market materialized in March 2010 with his appearance on The Mannish Boys' 5th anniversary release "Shake For Me". In 2011, Pete made his official American solo album debut with an incredible all-star recording line-up. "Choice Cuts" proved to be an instant classic, and got nominated for a Blues Music Award in the category 'best album debut'. A Big Pete show, is not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a true blues lover!
RJ MISCHO: RJ Mischo's formal music career got its start over 30 years ago while working his way up through the thriving Minneapolis blues scene—his first paying gig came by way of Mississippi-bred singer/guitarist Percy Strother in the late-1970s. By the early '80s, Mischo was working with Muddy Waters' band alumni, George "Mojo" Buford, and had discovered the secrets to achieving a full-tone on his harmonica via tongue-blocking, a method taught to him by recent Los Angeles transplant, Lynwood Slim, who had taken up residence in Minneapolis at the time. About a year after establishing an all-star blues jam with guitarist Teddy Morgan every Sunday evening at the Five Corners Bar in 1991, the pair released their collaborative debut effort, "Ready To Go," featuring vocalist Percy Strother on Blue Moon Records. Mischo's first official solo album, "Gonna Rock Tonight," followed in '94. Mischo continued to release top-shelf recordings, building up an impressive and sizable catalog in the process, while always employing the services of high caliber musicians such as Jeremy Johnson, Steve Freund, Junior Watson, Frank Goldwasser, Rusty Zinn, Kid Andersen, Barrelhouse Chuck, June Core and Richard Innes.
When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. The excitement in the room is palpable when he takes the stage; he is a superb vocalist and entertainer. His dynamic voice is large just like the man. With his old school vocal style, echoes of Muddy Waters, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass can be heard. At 6'5" he is a big man, but he moves with grace and energy. His fluid dance steps will remind you of the Legendary James Brown. Texas born Caron "Sugaray" Rayford began his musical career as a young boy singing & playing drums in church.
His gospel influence can be heard and felt in his music. Rayford's phrasing is intimate and conversational and the soulful gravel in his voice hints at his firsthand experience with hardship. He grew up in Texas, his childhood marked by poverty and loss. He remembered a sad game he played with his brothers, a competition that determined who was skinniest by counting the number of belt holes left unused. His mother struggled to raise three boys alone while battling cancer. When she died, it was a kind of relief. "She suffered and we suffered," Rayford said.
"Then, we moved in with my grandmother and our lives were a lot better. We ate every day and we were in church every day, which I loved. I grew up in gospel and soul." After moving to Los Angeles, Sugaray was asked to host a blues jam at the legendary blues club Cozy's, in Sherman Oaks. It is through this venue that Sugaray has met and played with innumerable world-class musicians. Suga's desire to explore and expand his musical vision has been nourished by these musicians.
His solo career has flourished in LA. He has done studio vocals on several projects, most recently on the theme for Judge Joe Brown, the movie trailer City Lights and backup vocals for the band The Heavy Pets. He partnered with Chuck Kavooras, a long time LA guitarist and owner of Slide Away Studios. Chuck became the musical director of the Monday night jams. He began booking the artists for the band around Suga's vocals and Sugaray and the CK All Stars were born. The first set of every Monday was performed by this house band, made up of top notch musicians.
Soon after being discovered by Deltagroove CEO Randy Chortkoff, Suga became part of the Deltagroove family. Currently Suga is fronting the Mannish Boys, together with the legendary blues man Finis Tasby. A Deltagroove solo debut is to be recorded in May, 2013.
It has been a life-long ambition of Mike Sponza to record a European blues summit, and he has been working towards this goal since 2004. Mike produced 2 cd's and a DVD with the "Central European Blues Convention" since then. It has been an incredible experience! Bringing together artists from all over Europe to compose the album it was like piecing together a jigsaw: different artists' styles, music preferences, cultural backgrounds not to mention the logistic and the economic implications. But then he wanted to create something different not an another compilation CD! The goal was to produce a homogenous cd where Blues is the common language! The songs are written for the purpose and artists experiences are fused together.
3 years of hard work, the EUROPEAN BLUES CONVENTION Album has been completed in
June 2011.
With 33 musicians coming for 12 different countries, this double album is the first project creating a musical blues union and it is the proof of the European blues people's strong sense of community.
Mike focused on a real exchange between artists: he created and proposed the concept of "songcrossing". It's cool to have a song composed, let's say, by a German Artist and performed by a Hungarian one, and so on....
Corrections, changes, mistakes occurred in order to create a real "concept album" made by some of the finest and most original performers available in the Continent. We all filter blues music through our personal life, environment and social life. We don't have imitators here, but people who make blues music.
This is the only "All-European" ensemble available, with a strong project and an original program. The show is based on song written by the members, and a few tributes to the classic blues authors. If you are looking for something really new and completely different from the "usual" proposals, well… YOU FOUND IT!
The live band is a selection of the musicians who played on the double album…. Here they are:
Flipping a Fender Stratocaster upside-down, acclaimed singer/songwriter/lefty guitarist Malina Moye fills a void in the entertainment industry. Described as a modern day renaissance woman, she's a quadruple threat, carving out her own lane in today's music scene as one of the few artists in history able to straddle both Rock and Soul genres. Moye's musical narrative boasts an impressive resume that includes making history as the first African-American woman to play the National Anthem on guitar at a professional sporting event, all the way to performing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tribute concert for music pioneer Chuck Berry. And recently, Malina was praised by Jet Magazine as "the highlight of the evening" after she headlined the largest peace concert on the west coast with Chaka Khan honoring the legendary humanitarian Stevie Wonder.
With an electrifying stage show, Malina delivers an intoxicating fusion of funk, and Rock. Her critically acclaimed LP "Diamonds & Guitars" reached number 35 on Amazon.com and iTunes respectively and a number 50 slot on the Billboard album charts, showcasing an eclectic pallet of music while preserving its mainstream appeal. Abroad and stateside, Moye's Diamond & Guitars tour served her as an opening act with Robin Thicke, and legendary rock group Journey.
pioneer among the new generation of lead guitarists, Malina is the first left-handed female player to be included on the legendary Fender Guitars' impressive roster of endorsees and to also join the critically acclaimed 2012 Experience Hendrix tour. Furthermore, the songstress was featured in the UK documentary "Stratmaster: The Greatest Guitar Story Ever Told," and Guitar World Magazine dubbed Malina the "female Jimi Hendrix" and "one of the top 10 female guitarists to know." UK's Blues and Soul Magazine touted Malina as having "…all the ingredients to shake the modern soul room."
In addition to being on Sony's writing team, Moye independently released her first R&B single "Girlfriend" through her WCE Records to great reviews and a number 43 slot on the R&B/Hip-Hop Billboard chart. Then Malina followed-up with her second single "Alone," which remained on the charts for 32 consecutive weeks. "Alone" peaked at no 9 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts and at number 27 on the hot 100. Rolling stone, Billboard Magazine and some of music's hottest names have raved that Malina is "a ground-breaking artist who makes indelible impression."
Malina's humanitarian efforts include serving as ambassador for HRH Prince Charles' Prince's Trust for which she donated her single "Hustler's Blues" to the Wilberforce 200 compilation CD. The record was one of the fastest selling soul CD's on iTunes UK with all proceeds going to the Trust and UNICEF.
Cover girl Malina Moye continues to build a brand name globally, appearing in campaigns like Victoria Secret's "Love Rocks" and shoe chain Steve Madden's Music amongst other retail powerhouses.
Malina is currently finishing her new record entitled "Rock 'N Roll Baby" slated for a late Spring release.

And the blues had a son
Much has been said and is still said about which artist, which song, when or how boogie, jump blues; rhythm and blues became rock and roll.
Was Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston? Louis Jordan with Caldonia? Or Big Joe Turner singing Shake Rattle & Roll?
Why not any song by John Lee Hooker?
It is here where we can find " Segarra Inn Blues". This project closes to " Rebeldes" by Carlos Segarra, an artist convinced of the fact that labels are to put on marmalade jars and not to use them with music.
" The Segarra hotel blues" have rooms to everyone, not only for those pioneers.
70s blues-rock-glam, strongly rooted in to those unforgettable electrifications years, makes rich the repertoire.
The blues had a child. His name…… that's the least of it.

The Giorcelli piano, is recreated in the old Honky Tonks Barrelhouses and New Orleans, while the old qualifies Vilardell walk from a train on their sticks.
